Tribe.net Chat Server...

Hello fellow Jabberheads-

I just wanted to drop in and let you all know that Tribe currently has a jabber server up and running, that uses the tribe user database and password authentication to create sessions. All you have to do is set your "TribeChat handle" (do this on the Personal tab of the profile pages) and then point your jabber client to:

Username: <handle>@maitai.tribe.net
Password: <your tribe password>

Your friend list is broken into 2 parts - those friends of yours who have set their TribeChat handle, and those who have not. We are using the openim server, which is a Java implementation of the XMPP protocol. So far it has been up for a couple weeks, but has not seen any real load. Feel free to log on and try it out.

I pressume it is accessible via the standard Jabber port 5222. Do you plan to make it accessible via the 443 port (with SSL) so that I could use it from inside of our firewall?

OK, I've got it set up, can see Tribe friends in two groups . . . now what? Should I be able to message friends as soon as they are 'online' according to Tribe? Since a tribe login isn't necessarily also an active jabber session, is there any way to tell if someone is 'really' there or not?

Also - forgive me as I'm newish to jabber protocol, having mostly been an ICQer - is there any way to use this to set up a realtime tribe-specific chat room?

Your friends will only show as online for chat if they are logged on to the chat server. We have not really made any effort to integrate those 2 notions of logged in yet, since it would require a little front-end trickery as well as having the back end server.

We don't support this yet, but it is a fairly obvious feature that we should think about doing when we go forward with enhancing the chat functionality.

Jabber with ssl uses port 5223, if you would like to use jabber from inside a firewall you need to look into servers with http-polling capabilites or use a server which uses JWChat or another web based jabber program like mine jabberchicago.net ... feel free to check it out.

It is not that I don't agree that the standard jabber SSL port is 5223 - but there are servers that let me connect on the 443 port which is available from inside of firewalls.

Does http-polling mean port 80? I believe 443 is more handy - as you can keep the connection through it, no need for polling and it is open in nearly every firewall.

JWChat is a nice option - but I won't install it just for access to tribe.net, and your server unfortunately does not let me connect to tribe.net.

Interesting, I didn't know some servers ran jabber services on 443, makes sense though. Http-polling, as it's name suggests, is a feature found on some jabber servers and components that enables emulation of a streaming connection over a stateless connection (ie. jabber over http) this is helpful because it will work on many networks which use web proxies or filter content to exclude all but http packets.

At my home machine I run SSH daemon on 443, and putty works with that from inside the firewall.

are you just using ssh for portfowarding or are you using a CLI jabber client?

Incidentally, I remembered the reason I leave my tribe account inactive in Psi... It doesn't appear to store vcard data so every time I login it prompts me for new vcard data - very annoying.

Excuse me if I was not explicite enough - I don't use my home machine as a jabber server. I just wanted to share that little trick with ssh over the 443 port. But there is a public jabber server listening on 443 - it is jabber80.com and I use it with Gaim.

It is probbable that if I wasn't using that port for sshd I would run a jabberd on that port.

Our server has been up and down a bit lately. FYI, we use something called openIM, which I chose because it had a nice way to integrate the existing tribe.net authentication and roster (i.e. friend list) code. I have been considering moving to Jive as it seems as though there is far more support and mindshare for that impl. Our requirements are simply that the server we use allow us to use the same (java-based) authentication and friend list code that the application uses. If I can't at least integrate at that level then there is no reason to integrate at all!
